Max Kindred

Net Zero Carbon Senior Insight Manager, NHS England

At HRC, Max will be leveraging the voice and experience of the customer in striving to reduce carbon emissions and reach net zero for food and food preparation in the NHS. At NHS England, Max is a key leader in the team responsible for delivering a net zero food provision encompassing food preparation, food waste and the supply chain. The NHS provides almost 150 million meals to patients, staff and visitors.

The NHS was the first national health system in the world to commit to becoming ‘carbon net zero’ in 2020. By 2036-2039, the NHS aims to have achieved an 80% reduction in carbon emissions and is striving to reach net zero by 2045. As a sustainability professional, Max leads on the teams carbon reporting and guides the team on the most impactful interventions. Through Max’s targeted guidance, some hospitals have been able to reduce carbon emissions by up to 18%, using recipes from the NHS Food Platform, while costs at worst remain neutral. One of the current focuses is the wild west that is Kitchen energy usage, where estimates can vary wildly, very few have focus on and even fewer can provide the right guidance.

Max has experience on the international climate stage, as a Jamaican Delegate at COP 26 in Glasgow and his formative years in the chemical industry allow him to grasp technical topics.
