The NHS was the first national health system in the world to commit to becoming ‘carbon net zero’ in 2020. By 2036-2039, the NHS aims to have achieved an 80% reduction in carbon emissions and is striving to reach net zero by 2045. As a sustainability professional, Max leads on the teams carbon reporting and guides the team on the most impactful interventions. Through Max’s targeted guidance, some hospitals have been able to reduce carbon emissions by up to 18%, using recipes from the NHS Food Platform, while costs at worst remain neutral. One of the current focuses is the wild west that is Kitchen energy usage, where estimates can vary wildly, very few have focus on and even fewer can provide the right guidance.
