Walk for Wellbeing: Hospitality comes together to support mental health this October

This year’s Walk For Wellbeing in aid of Hospitality Action will take place between 8th - 16th October, taking in World Mental Health Day on 10th October.

Walk For Wellbeing is a fun, flexible event all about taking simple steps to promote wellbeing. Participants can treat each walk like a journey, as they spend time in the fresh air, moving and utilising their time to reflect and energise.

The funds raised will be donated to industry charity Hospitality Action who support all those who work, or have worked, in the UK hospitality sector. Already this autumn Hospitality Action have experienced a 30% increase in applications for financial support while more than 50% of applicants are presenting with household arrears such as rent or utilities placing many at risk of homelessness. Meanwhile 35% of beneficiaries are directly referencing mental health issues in their application, often reporting that this is exacerbated by financial problems.

To support Hospitality Action’s work the nation is invited to put on their walking shoes and join a ‘take part any time’ challenge between October 8th – 16th, encompassing World Mental Health Day 2022 on Monday October 10th.

Four hosted Walk For Wellbeing 20km events will take place in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow, on Sunday 16 October.

London’s hosted walk, powered by UK hospitality talent partner, mum, will take place in the Royal Parks and finish with a post-celebration at The Royal Lancaster London.

The Birmingham route, hosted by local hospitality recruitment agency, Tonic Talent begins and ends in Digbeth, the city’s creative quarter. All walkers will be treated to beer and pizza at Crazy Pedro’s upon finishing.

The Manchester walk, beginning at Sale Water Park, is hosted by the Manchester Hotelier’s Association. Walkers will follow the lake, joining the river Mersey, before heading along the river bank to Chorlton Water Park and beyond. At the end of the walk well-deserved drinks and snacks will be available to all participants at Sale Water Park Clubhouse.

The Glasgow route, hosted by DAM, will start with a quick fun warm up with a qualified fitness instructor before taking in Strathclyde Country Park, ending with light food and drink at The Family Restaurant.

The event is accessible to all ages and abilities, regardless of fitness level. Walk For Wellbeing aims to raise funds and awareness for mental health. Participants are able to have fun whilst bringing awareness to an important issue. So far, over 250 individuals and 80 teams including Z Hotels, The Ivy Collection, Shangri-La The Shard and TGI Fridays have signed up and raised over £45,000.

Walk For Wellbeing is powered by UK hospitality talent partner, mum, in partnership with Caterer.com, Davidson Asset Management (DAM) and The Caterer. The campaign is also supported by Sean Wheeler Consulting Limited, Lexington Catering, Tonic Talent, The Manchester Hoteliers Association and The Relationship.

Those looking to participate are able to do so in their own way, individually or as part of a group by signing up via the Walk For Wellbeing website: http://walkforwellbeing.org/

Founder of hospitality talent partner, mum and Walk For Wellbeing, Craig Prentice, said: “As the industry is facing an increasingly difficult time with an ongoing cost-of-living crisis, many businesses are set to struggle to keep their doors open. Hospitality is renowned for coming together to support great causes, and great things happen when good people come together. Whilst we are encouraging people to get involved and support Walk For Wellbeing, it’s about people doing what they can. Any support is a big help. We hope to see everybody walking the walk with us this year!”
